Steeple Market Burns Christmas Eve 2008

A Sad Day in Fairfax History by Mike Cain
Fire Destroys Steeple Market
An historic landmark in the heart of Fairfax
was destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve.
Henry Raymond's site has lots of photos.
About 8:00pm, Wednesday evening, a neighbor
called 911 after he saw smoke coming from the
building. Thick black smoke was coming out of
the foundation and the back basement door.
Firefighters struggled with very thick smoke,
high heat and 40+mph winds. Flames came out
the back door on the second floor an hour later.
Flames spread through the kitchen to the steeple.
Cathy Thayer got an interesting photo,
By 11:00pm, the steeple had fallen into the
blazing fire. There were no injuries.
At least one man is homeless. More to come.
Thanks to all the firefighters from many towns.

A Letter of Thanks
From the Fairfax Selectboard
Regarding the Steeple Market Fire.
It's Got A Steeple On It !!!
Pierre Menard, owner of Steeple Market, came
before the Fairfax Selectboard Monday night and
presented a preliminary drawing of what a new
Steeple Market may look like. He hopes to re-build,
but it might take a couple months for insurance.
He will make a final decision at that time.
The preliminary drawings have a steeple on top, but
the building is not as tall since there are no apart-
ments upstairs. Pierre and the Board need to work out
water allotments, but no problems were seen.
A meeting with the Development Review Board will
also be needed somewhere down the road.
Pierre is doing well and sends his thanks to all.
